Classic 4-H Club Family Day Camp May 30th

Classic 4-H Club to Host Family Fun Day Camp at Shawnee Creek Ranch

Submitted by: Rene’ McCracken, CEP-AgNR

The smell of summer is in the air and kids everywhere are looking forward to the last day of school. This year before you hear the dreaded, “I’m bored” phase that is so popular among our children, mark your calendar for an event guaranteed to knock the boredom right out of the whole family. The Classic 4-H Club of New Summerfield, voted this year to host a Family Fun Day Camp at Shawnee Creek Ranch in Laneville, TX to end this years club activities. Designed with the whole family in mind, there are several activities suited for ages three and up. This event is open to all families despite their membership in 4-H clubs or not.

The Classic 4-H Club is primarily a clover kids club with most members under the age of nine that has been meeting monthly in the New Summerfield Ag Classroom to develop leadership skills and public speaking but mostly to have a great time! Most of Classic’s members were too young to participate in the up-coming week long 4-H Summer Camps. Therefore, when the inspiration of the day camp came from a parent whose little girl loved the idea of camping, the discussion resulted in the first annual 4-H Family Day Camp being scheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2009 beginning at 5:00 pm to dark.

Shawnee Creek Ranch will provide campsites, “fishing hole”, hayride, campfire, and petting zoo, for all to enjoy. There is no charge for the day, but you should contact Cooperative Extension Agent, Rene’ McCracken to reserve your spot and get directions to the ranch by May 29, 2009 at 903-683-5416. You should be prepared to, fish, set up a campsite and fire, roast or cook on the open fire, play games, and identify wildlife. Please bring enough food for your family and dress appropriately. The games, prizes and some fishing equipment will be provided. When you call a more complete list of necessary items to bring is available.

Recently, with the cancellation of several camps and activities due to both funding shortfalls or H1N1 flu, including H.S. Estelle 4-H Summer Camp in Huntsville, the alternative of a day camp may be just what the situation asks for. If you would like more information or to RSVP please contact the Cherokee County Extension Office in Rusk, at 903-683-5416 or lrmccracken@ag.tamu.edu.
